Research apps sometimes want PLY even when you started in USDZ. This route dumps geometry to binary PLY. It is the wrong route for a slicer (use USDZ to STL) and the wrong route for web (use USDZ to GLB).

USDZ as the source: Geometry only. Color and clips are dropped. Measured 2026-09-13 by running this converter’s own loaders and exporters headlessly. How every format was measured.
USDZ is parsed with the File API. PLY is written in memory. The USDZ material pack and Quick Look zip. That is a format rule, not an upload. Files over 80 MB are refused because RAM is the limit.
